There is something about not really knowing what to expect about an experience that makes one a little nervous and thrilled at the same time. This is what Il Giro, a clandestine pizzeria of sorts, is all about.
Situated in the outskirts of Quito, Mathew and Florencia offer a one of a kind experience dinning in a backyard. With an amazing outdoor rustic oven heating up and pizza toppings ready to be served, we are greeted by both of them and taken to our table. You have to understand that this is the type of experience that you share with friends and strangers.
Picnic tables are set up for 6 to 10 people, depending on the reservations for that night. Once you are seated Matt tells you what flavors of pizza he’s offering for that night and drinks are offered and served. If you have any special food needs, this is the time to tell your host. This whole setup has a cost of $15 per person which includes all the pizza you can eat, a complementary cocktail and dessert (drinks are charged separately).
Eventually other guests started to arrive, and the pizzas started to come out the oven. The dough, don’t get me started! Crisp, with the right amount of softness inside. The toppings were delicious and abundant.
Pizza, pizza, pizza
Crunchy serrano ham with parmesan, next an onion jam with Italian salame and ricotta. The sweetness of the jam with the tartness of the salame and ricotta hits the spot. A classic margherita, with a rich tomato sauce and fresh basil, these were just the first three pizzas that came along. I’ll let you come and enjoy the experience, so you can taste for yourself all the wonderful flavors that Il Giro has to offer.
New friends
Our table had people from all walks of life, a lawyer, musicians, restaurant manager, full time mom, architect and yours truly. We had a great time talking to each other, learning about our likes and dislikes. Finally, as the check rolled by we exchanged phone numbers and decided to go out for drinks in a few weeks. At the end, that’s what it’s about right?
